$20,000 and 20,000 miles! These were our goals this year and we beat them both!
|
63 Mile Team Redders |
Congratulations to all Team Red members! You made us the #1 Friends & Family Team in the Philadelphia Tour de Cure, blowing away our goal of $20,000 and
raising over $28,000! And as a team,
we rode over 20,000 miles in 7 weeks in the Iron Andy Challenge to sponsor a child for diabetes camp!
Awesome job, everyone! And this is just our 2nd year! We're looking for bigger things next year and beyond.
|
35 Mile Team Redders |
Special
congratulations go out to Kase's Corner (the #2 Friends & Family team) - they raised roughly $18,000! And to all the other
Friends & Family fundraisers for doing such a great job on their
efforts. As Team Red, we have an unfair advantage because we
are the "house team" and we pull a lot of solo riders into Team Red to provide a better experience for them at the Tour de Cure. These other teams have done a phenomenal grass roots job rallying their
friends and families to help our vital cause!
Our Mission
Team Red's primary mission is to improve the overall Tour de Cure experience for riders without a team, folks that would have ridden as solo riders. Secondary objectives are to foster development of new teams, increase rider recruitment to the Tour de Cure, and to increase fundraising activity amongst riders.
Beyond Our Mission
Something magical has begun to happen with Team Red in Philly this year. As part of achieving our mission, we recognized tat unlike other teams, there is no common bond between Team Red members other than we are supporting the fight against diabetes. Many of us are virtual strangers. So, we decided that we needed year-round activities so our members could get to know each other, and build bonds. That is why we hold training rides year-round, as well as other fun events like bowling night and the team barbecue.
|
April Fool's Day Art Museum Ride |
Of course, there are more rides in the warmer months, and many of us get together for our Featured Monthly Rides where we all ride an organized ride other than the Tour de Cure. We choose rides that don't require fundraising, and nominal registration proceeds benefit a worthy cause. But we have a core group of
"Polar Bears" that ride all through winter in sub-freezing temperatures, and ice and snow! We've even formed a
Century Club where some of our members vote on a century ride to do together and ride 100 miles that day - this year it is the
Lake Nockamixon Century on August 25th. Heck, we even have some races we're doing - a few time trials for those that want to go fast.
|
Charlie's Ambler Ride - May 19th |
But
Team Red is for everyone, and we really mean it. We have rides for folks of all levels, and we welcome everyone and make rides comfortable for everyone. Sometimes we have to split the group so the faster riders have their own brand of fun, but newer riders shouldn't be afraid - we really make everyone feel at home. Although it's best to pick rides that best suit your abilities. We also partner with area cycling clubs to let us join their rides - they have much more selection, and they mark their rides very clearly as to distance, speed, and terrain.
Ah, but back to where the magic happens. We have a lot of folks with diabetes coming out with regularity on our rides. For some, this is new - not something they were doing before. It's healthy and vital exercise to fight their diabetes. And oftentimes, we discuss techniques to manage our diabetes, in general, and while exercising. Team Red has really become a great social support and community to help people fight their diabetes.
We really are helping people! Isn't that what it's all about?
|
Bill Edwards' Frenchtown Ride - May 20th |
We have even begun working with doctors who recommend exercise to their diabetes patients to refer them to Team Red as a social support and exercise community that may help them fight their diabetes. We have a program to reach out to vets with diabetes to ride with us, and hopefully we'll be creating Team Vet in a couple years as this community grows within Team Red.
Come out and join us on rides, or for fun events. It's all on our
meetup site - you can see all the upcoming rides and choose the ones you want to join. Just go here to see it all:

Iron Andy 7-Week Cycling Challenge
The
Iron Andy Foundation provided a
challenge to Team Red Philly. If the team rode over 20,000 miles in the 7 weeks leading up to the Philadelphia Tour de Cure, Iron Andy would sponsor a child for diabetes camp. Furthermore, individual riders could compete on Hubbub in the Iron Andy Personal Challenge where riders planning to ride 63, 35, or 12 miles in the Tour de Cure would compete against each other to win $300, $150, and $50, respectively - the rider with the most miles logged in the 7 weeks challenge would win the prize money toward their Tour de Cure fundraising.
The
Iron Andy Foundation believes that everyone should have an
opportunity to live a healthy and active life. It is the Foundation’s
mission to help children, young adults and families dealing with
diabetes have a proactive approach and attitude towards managing and
fighting this chronic disease.
The
Iron Andy Foundation promotes
enriching lives through a combination of physical activity, fundraising,
education and public awareness and service. The Foundation’s flagship
program, the Iron Andy Challenge, provides scholarships to diabetes
camps and leadership conferences to children and young adults with
diabetes who demonstrate a commitment to these core principles.

Polar Bearz
Our Polar Bearz are the epitome of dedication, braving sub-freezing temperatures, ice and snow, to ride year-round! But not rain. Wet and hot is OK. Cold is OK. But wet and cold - nooooo way! OK, we're finicky polar bears. ; ) But hey, I do remember riding in 4 inches of snow w/ studded snow tires - so that's gotta be worth something, right?

New Teams
I'm proud to announce our first spin-off team of Team Red Philly - Lockheed Martin!
Skillfully captained by our very own
Leticia Amadio Arrington, Lockheed Martin was wildly successful on 2012 to place
2nd in the Corporate Team division, raising over $8,000!
Perhaps next year Leticia will give the perennial champions, Johnson & Johnson, a run for their money.
Joining Leticia is charter Team Red member,
Sanjay Shah - who also works at Lockheed. Both Leticia and Sanjay remain honorary Team Red members for life
(you can't never leave! or avoid the long arms of my spam!) and we maintain a kinship with our Lockheed Martin friends.

Funding & Sponsorship
Many people think the ADA provides funds for Team Red, but that is not the case. The ADA provides marketing support by putting the word out about Team Red, and some logistical support on the day of the Tour de Cure, but beyond that, it's all from our Team Red Stars. Although we watch our finances as best as possible, it's still a bit much to be provided by a handful of members. We're looking for financial support from members and sponsors. If you can provide time, money, or in-roads to potential sponsors, please contact Kevin Horio at kevinhorio@yahoo.com. This can really help Team Red improve the experience for our members and help grow the Tour de Cure!
See you all at next year's Tour de Cure! And come out and get to know everyone, join our
Team Red training rides!
