TEAM RED Century Club

So I was emailing with Joe Niszczak, one of our Team Red members, and he had a wonderful idea!  Let's create a Team Red Century Club!

We'll pick a ride later in the year where we'd do the 100 mile ride as Team Red.  Everyone that makes it will be in the 2012 Century Club!  What will you get?  Bragging rights!  A good feeling inside!  Enshrinement for all posterity on our Team Red website!  Who knows, maybe we'll have enough budget for t-shirts - but that might be a long shot.  ; )

So we need to pick a ride.  I know fundraisers are special rides that each of us pick for our own reasons, so we'll limit the options to registration-fee-only rides.

Go to our Team Red meetup to vote on our poll, ranking each ride from 1-10 (10 is best) based on the desirability of the ride to you:

Your vote *really* does make a difference here.

Cheers,

    2. Absolutely - we can work in some Mock Nocks - do portions of the route as we train. And our other featured monthly rides would be great training as well.

  4. Have a Question, just purchased 2011 specialized allez compact think I made mistake not sure though. I have total knee replacement and only way I get a flat ride around here is on the trainer. Otherwise its hills and more hills
and double chain ring is reaking havoc on my knee. Question, would it be possible to swap out double for triple chainring will call bike shop in few hours but am intrested in hearing from others.

Level of intrest seems high for T/R Century team I'm in

  5. This could be simple, but it could also be fairly extensive - depends on a lot of factors.

You may have to change the bottom bracket when you put a triple on because the crank side of the triple needs to sit further out to provide space for the inner ring. Typically, you need a BB with a longer crank side spindle. But it might fit on your current BB - depends how tight the tolerances were, but since its a racing bike, probably the tolerance was tight.

Also, you may have to change the front and rear derailleurs. Derailleurs have a capacity rating that indicate how much gear range they can accommodate. Racing derailleurs tend to have tight ranges because they usually don't need to span large gear ranges. Touring bikes and MTBs have derailleurs that handle more range in expectation of more varying terrain, and heavier bike loads. So, the front derailleur may need to change to handle the wider overall range of the triple rings. And the rear derailleur may need to change as a racing derailleur won't have a long enough cage to pull up all the chain slack as you move through the gear ranges.

There's another potential complication if you've got an 11-speed cluster on the back. They don't make long cage 11-speed rear derailleurs yet - 11 speed clusters are currently only on racing bikes, so no long cage needs. If you do have an 11-speed cluster, you'll have to go down to at least a 10, and then you'd have to change the shifter as well - to match the 10 speed indexing.

Lastly, depending on how the front derailleur cable routes, you may have to replace the cable if you need more length to accommodate the new derailleur. Potentially this may also be the case for the rear, but probably should be OK.

See what the shop says. But it'll end up depending on the things I noted here. I hope it ends up being more on the simple side. ; )
